New platforms = New ideas

There’s a new camera platform that is out and hitting its stride – micro 4/3d’s. We’ve been playing with the Panasonic GF1, a great little camera that you can change lenses on, but which has the profile of a rangefinder – very small and quiet. A whole new industry is starting to percolate around this format, which has been brilliantly managed into a new standard across manufacturers. One case in point is this outfit: Noktor, which has developed their first product, and ultra-fast prime lens for 4/3 mount- before they even approached the Nikon or Canon mount that are industry standards. Kudos to them!

It’s been a fascinating side development in camera-land that digital cameras have created a new life in optics. The instant feedback and flexibility of a digital camera means that photographers are rewarded for playing with optics that are out of the mainstream. A prime move in this space has been the fantastic Lensbaby with their lines of innovative and inexpensive optics that deliver images that are deliberately out of focus, not sharp, or distorted. What a blast! We’ve been playing with these for a long time and with other bizarre lenses (here’s a post I wrote about this before…)

In any case – look out. Photography is changing in radical ways. Going digital has taken this sleepy industry into overdrive and we love it! Oh, here are some shots with the lensbaby at BIFF last year:
